Cougars Off to Good Start for 2006 Season

The UNB Cougars men's baseball team won three of four games to start off the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association season on the weekend.

The Cougars swept the visiting Cape Breton University Capers by scores of 3-0 and 3-2 Saturday at Royals Field and split a pair against the Saint Mary's Huskies Sunday, splitting a pair of 1-0 pitcher's duels with the Saint Mary's Huskies.

Saturday, Alex English fired a two-hit shutout as the Cougars scored all they would need with a first inning pair of runs. English fanned four and walked just one for the Cougars. Andrew McNeil hit a double and single to lead the Cougars at the plate. Brad Lawson added a double.

Cougars won the nightcap 3-2 in extra innings as Jake Waugh went the distance to outduel Cape Breton lefty Jamie Williams.

Waugh surrendered six hits, walked two and whiffed 11. Williams gave up just two hits, walked five and hit a pair. Phil Brown drove in McNeil with the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

The pitching was just as spectacular on Sunday as the Cougars and Huskies traded 1-0 victories.

In the opener, Steve Sommerville spun a complete game four hitter, walked one and fanned a pair. Jake Waugh drove in the game winning run.

In the second game, Saint Mary's star Duncan Cronk - he spends his summer in Saint John with the Expos of the New Brunswick Junior Baseball League- subdued the Cougars on just two hits, walked three and fanned three to earn the win over McNeil, who lasted three innings, gave up two hits and the earned run, walked three and fanned six. Jared Doyle and Ryan Corey finished up. The Huskies left 14 men on base over the seven innings, but scored the only run they would need in the third. The results were enough to put the Cougars third in the first CIBA rankings, behind Dalhousie, which went 4-0 on the opening weekend of play. Ottawa U is second, with UNB listed third, Saint Mary's fourth and Queens University of Ontario fifth.

The Cougars are in Moncton Wednesday to face the ABU Mets.
