University of New Brunswick Cougars and St. Francis Xavier X-Men split a pair of games Sunday in Atlantic Intercollegiate Baseball League action in Antigonish. UNB won the first game 11-1, blasting out 10 hits behind the pitching of Nick Greelman, who walked three and struckout three while allowing five hits. Kevin Smith was the losing pitcher. X-Men rebounded in the second game, winning 7-5 with Nathan Fraser getting the win, allowing nine hits. Losing pitcher was Ryan Corey. X-Men had 13 hits in the game. UNB also won a game that was originally postponed because of rain on Sept. 15 by the score of 8-5. Andrew MacNeill was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits. Nathan Wentzell was the loser, allowing six hits.
On Saturday, both pitchers put in gutsy complete game performances in the rain at Royals Field in Fredericton. X-men's lefty, Nathan Fraser takes home the win scattering 6 hits,struck out 4 and gave up 3 free passes. Peter Shaw of UNB suffers a tough loss, giving up only 3 hits, struck out 5 and walked 4 batters. Matt Davis delivered offensive punch for the X-Men going 2 for 2 at the plate with a walk, and drove in all 3 runs for the visitors. Brad Lawson and Andrew McNeill each had a pair of singles for UNB.
On Sunday UNB hosted the ABU Mets, in game 1 ABU's Steve Aube went the distance to get the win, scattering 7 hits, walked 1, and struk out 4. Offensively for ABU was Chris Legere w 3 singles, an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Andrew MacLaggan drove in the only UNB run.
In game 2 Shane Guptill gets the win in relief of starter Ryan Corey. Guptill threw the final 4 innings of this 9 inning thriller, giving up just 2 hits, while he walked 2 and struck out 3. He allowed no runs! Offensively for the UNB comeback was Phil Brown and Joel Calhoun each with 3 singles. Brown scored 3 times and had 2 stolen bases to his credit. Calhoun's 4th inning 2 RBI single tied the gam to force the extra innings. Starter Ryan Corey added 2 singles himself including the leadoff for in the bottom of the 9th..Mackenzie Washburn moved him over with a pinch hit sac bunt. Calhoun then singled, moving him to 3rd for Norris Philpotts who delivered a deep sac fly to score Corey for the win!
Entering it's 10th year of existence, the UNB Men's Baseball Team kicked of the 2007 season with 4 straight wins on the road. UNB traveled to Cape Breton on Saturday September 8th and swept two games from the Capers. UNB banged out 10 hits in a 10 to 5 win in game 1. Ryan MacDonald pitched 7 innings to pick up the win allowing 8 hits, 5 earned runs, walked 1 and struck out 2. Norris Philpots lead the way offensively with a home run, a triple and 5 r.b.i.'s. Marc Stromme contributed two singles while 5 others had singles.
In game 2, Andrew MacNeill pitched the complete game in a 3 to1 victory. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits, walker 4 and struck out 12. UNB struggled at the plate with only two singles from Andrew MacLaggan and Travis Gaudet but picked up 7 walks.
On Sunday, UNB headed to Halifax to take on the Dalhousie Tigers in another double header. UNB won both games by scores of 15 to 7 and 12 to 1. In game 1, Shane Guptil picked up in relief of Phil Brown, shutting the door for the last 2 1/3 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 walk while striking 1 out. Offensively, UNB was lead by MacKenzie Washburn with a single and a double while Brad Lawson, Norris Philpots and Andrew MacLaggan each had 2 singles. Andrew McNeill and Philpots bot scored 3 times.
In Game 2, Joel Calhoun went 5 innings in the mercy shortened game, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 3 walks and 5 strike outs. Andrew MacLaggan had 4 singles while Norris Philpots had 2 doubles to lead the attack. Andrew McNeill, Brad Lawson and Marc Stromme both had 2 singles.
UNB is home this coming Saturday and Sunday against ST.F.X and A.B.U. Respectively at Royals Field. Game times are 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. both days
